I hope those PBS watchers got to see last nights episode of an insight to the Church. However tonight and tomorrow night or perhaps back to back there are two presentations on "The Mormons".
Since I have TiVo I have not watched anything yet. The offical stance from the website of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has asked people to watch and to send their responses to the site. I have the link if someone watches and wants to comment.
I would welcome any responses here on my small part of the blog. My book can be delayed for this viewing.
Take care. Beth.
As someone following the presidential run of mormon, Williard Mitt Romney, I was really struck by this story.
I gew up in the mormon church, and never heard of this….ever. I truly was shocked to learn of this.

FROM THE STORY....
Beneath the sands of the once-beautiful land lie the bones of more than 120 men, women and children slain at Mountain Meadows on September 11, 1857, their mortal remains left to the caprices of nature and their killers protected by Utah’s peculiar theocracy. Only one participant was ever punished for the butchery, although more than 50 men took part.
The killers were mostly Mormons; they were respectable members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but even to this day, the church, while recognizing that Mormons took part in the massacre, disputes claims that the murders were part of an organized plot directed by the church’s leaders.
It’s really interesting that this took place on 9/11 in 1957.
In 1859, two years after the massacre, Brevet Major James Henry Carleton arrived in the area to investigate. At Mountain Meadows where he found women’s hair tangled in sage brush and the bones of children still in their mothers’ arms.[48] Carleton later said it was “a sight which can never be forgotten.” After gathering up the skulls and bones of those who had died, Carleton’s troops buried them and erected a rock cairn inscribed with the words, Here 120 men, women, and children were massacred in cold blood early in September, 1857. They were from Arkansas, along with a cross bearing the words, Vengeance is mine. I will repay, saith the Lord.
This is by NO means meant to represent Mormons today, or Mitt Romney. I am just curious why it is hidden history.
You can run a google on Mountain Meadows Massacre and learn more. I found most all the same info on several sites.
I tried to post this information on one of my blogs, and it was rejected. Yet, there were all kinds of posting on other things about how bad gays are.
I don't know what your issue is. Utah was at war. The federal government was at odds with the presiding law enforcement agency of the territory of Utah. Martial law was declared by Brigham Young. Passes were required of all who passed through the territory. This wagon train had no pass. They had links to people who had murdered other Mormons. Look it up in Wikipedia. The cause of the massacre is a matter of speculation. I suggest you move on with your life.
My husband has told me much about you. I hope and pray that you are strong and finding deepening peace in spite of the problems of your health. And aloha.
Bert

The man responsible for the massacure was quickly dealt with by both the Church and Civil Authorities. He was the leader and he took his punishment as any captain of a regiment should when their is a failure or victory.
I agree killing unared children is wrong but armened women and children do pose a threat to their attackers. Additionally at this time neither side knew of the ending of the war. What happened will be dealth with by Heavenly Father as He and the participants are the only beings to know what really happened, as a cavate I would like to add that Jesus Christ our Eternal King and the Holy Spiit also know.
I would like to say the act was condemmed by all of the members of the Church as a whole; however, there were some who congratulated the victory and some who felt that the principles of the Church were ignoreded and therefore it was more than bad jugement on their part and salvation or not falled.
As for the media or other sources for the incident you could find the current responses in any library and go through the microfice or old newspaper reports that won't put our predesessors in a good light.
This incident also strained the relationship with the indiginious people of the area; with whom they had been very good neighbors.
It is interesting how the truth will come out on judmentday. I have always hoped it was like trials we have here anyone can wonder in and out as a visitor unless of course you will have to be a witness. Somehow when each of the trials are happening. I mean wouldn't you love to hear what their defenses will be.
Anyway take care and I do appreciate your particaption in this discussion albiet the length of time it has gotten to me to respond. I will my virtual dissapearence this Summer. Take care of yourself.
